Back Injuries and Pain

Whether it is sore and achy in an ‘aggravating’ sort of way or really crying out for attention, your back injury and related back pain can make it difficult to perform the simplest of activities of daily living let along concentrate and perform your day to day work.

Your Back

Your body relies on the spinal column for overall structural stability.  The shoulders, rib cage and pelvis are anchored to the spine for strength and support.  You also rely on the spinal column for mobility and the ability to twist, bend and flex your body for different activities.

Common back injuries that affect strength, support, mobility and flexibility can include:

  • Sprains and strains to the muscles and soft tissues of the back
  • Herniated disks
  • Fractured vertebrae

What causes back injuries and back pain?

Back injuries and back pain can result from sports, work activities, exerting your self around the house and yard, or a sudden shocking jar during a motor vehicle accident.

Many back problems are actually the result of a combination of factors in addition to whether or not you were engaged in an actual activity at the time of the injury.  Some things like family history aren’t really preventable.  Other things like weight, fitness and flexibility, can be controlled and changed as they are often directly related to our lifestyle.

In our society, back pain is the most common cause of loss of activity among adults under 45.  It’s estimated that over 80% of all American works suffer back pain at some time during their career.

Chronic back and/or back and leg pain can also result from spinal conditions like arachnoiditis, degenerative disc disease, epidural fibrosis, lumbar disc herniation, osteoporosis, and spinal stenosis.

Your lumbar spine endures the burden and impact of all the bending, sitting, standing, and lifting you do.  No wonder the lower back or lumbar spine region is the most common site of back injuries and back pain.  And, the pain may also extend into the legs and feet.  The injured or painful areas of the back or legs may feel inflamed or sore to the touch.

The pain you feel may increase with movement.  Your back pain may be sharp and "knife-like" in character, "burning", or just a dull muscular ache.  Your symptoms might be "uncomfortable" to really disabling and incapacitating.
