What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world.  The actual term "acupuncture" describes procedures that involve stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques.  The acupuncture technique most known and studied involved penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture can successfully treat a great number of common ailments.

The theory underlying acupuncture postulates that energy circulates constantly throughout the body, much as does blood, by means of invisible channels known as meridians.  There are perceptible as a series of sensitive points on the skin.  It is these points that are treated, most commonly by the insertion of needles but also by the application of heat, massage and electrotherapy.

The Chinese believe that disease is the manifestation of a disturbance in the body’s balance of yin and yang energy.

The aim of acupuncture is to bring this energy back into balance by the stimulation or depression of the flow of energy in the various meridians.
